The premise for the Hubbis Digital Dialogue event of April 21 is very simple. How should Asia’s private clients set about future-proofing their investments in the face of the current bout of inflation in the major developed economies of the world, and what does all this mean for the emerging economies and rest of the world, where, at least for now, inflation seems to be less of immediate concern?
The panel will first set about painting the picture around inflation. There are many different views. Some very eminent economists and analysts believe that despite the recent rising inflation numbers and rate rises in the major economies, we remain in a low or no growth world ahead where inflation and rates will remain low for many years to come. Others believe that the inflation genie is out of the bottle after several decades and will wreak havoc on profits, financial stability and investments across the globe. Some argue that this is a phenomenon that afflicts only the major US and European economies, while most of Asia, Latin America and other emerging economies will stay structurally low inflation markets.
Whatever the particular view espoused, there is no doubt that private clients the world over are adjusting their portfolios in face of this temporary, or persists, or expanding inflation. The experts will debate how Asia’s HNW and UHNW investors should adjust their holdings, perhaps from growth to value and cyclical, from public to private assets, possibly from the major Western economies to more Asian and other emerging markets, from mainstream to more alternatives such as gold, or even cryptos and digital assets. And what about the elephant in the room, China, where the central bank stands out amongst the world’s leading economies as having room to lower rather than raise rates?
