He is licensed by the Financial Planning Association of Singapore and affiliated with the Market Technicians Association of New York. He is a regular contributor to magazines in Asia. Afonso is often sought after as a guest speaker on matters related to international finance. He works in Singapore, Saigon and Shanghai. Afonso founded Total Wealth Management Pte Ltd in 2003. He was appointed Portugal's Hon. Consul in Ho Chi Minh in 2011, with the main task of attracting FDI from Vietnam to Portugal and vice-versa.
