ANZ announces expansion of Family Office Unit

ANZ Private Bank, the private banking arm of ANZ Bank, has revealed that it has expanded its Family Office Unit, appointing Hayden Matthews as Director and Benjamin Pedley as Investment Advisor.

Matthews joined ANZ from HSBC, where he was Managing Director and Head of Private Banking for HSBC Australia, according to his LinkedIn. He brings nearly 13 years of experience to his new role, having held positions in Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan, alongside spending 5 years with HSBC.

In his new role, Matthews will have responsibility for building out the business, with a particular focus on Australasia.

Pedley has joined ANZ from Hokkaido Asset Management, where he was Chief Investment Officer, a firm which provides Asia-Pacific family offices and charitable entities with advice on asset allocation and deal flow, according to Pedley’s LinkedIn.

In addition to his time at Hokkaido Asset Management, Pedley held roles at firms such as Macquarie Bank, Dow Jones, LGT Bank, with experience spanning Hong Kong, Australia and the UK. Pedley was notably the Head of Investment Strategy, Asia for HSBC from Q3 2013 to Q2 2016, based in Hong Kong, and the Head of Investments for UBS Wealth Management from July 2010 to December 2012, based in Melbourne. In all, Pedley brings over three decades of experience to his new role.

A spokesperson for ANZ reportedly has said “They join the well-established family office team that has been operating within ANZ Private Bank for a number of years.”

In 2016, according to a Citywire Asia report, sold its Asian-market-based retail banking and wealth management business to DBS in 2016 for a reported USD75.5 million above book value, and included ANZ’s Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and Indonesia operations.
