Indonesia’s huge population is growing fast, and so too is the country’s private wealth. Money has flowed back onshore following the government’s tax amnesty, and the regulators are keen to keep that onshore and boost the onshore proposition.

A panel of experts will assemble for the September 24 Hubbis Digital Dialogue to offer their insights into the evolution of the wealth management industry in Indonesia, and to help define what needs to be done for it to develop more robustly. Greater regulatory creativity is needed, with the regulators working more closely with the private sector to develop products and the customer base. There is a huge conservatism amongst those with money, with deposits still the preferred option for perhaps more than 90% of the investible money, so market education surrounding investment products must expand rapidly, while the regulators and the industry must combine to expand the range of investment opportunities, and the message must be delivered to people across the length and breadth of the country’s vast territories. The same applies to the insurance market, where there are enormous protection gaps throughout the entire population. There is also a real shortage of advisory talent to cope with the wealth management industry’s growth, although smart digital solutions can help incumbent banks and other players develop and boost their proposition.

At the same time, the industry is striving to enhance the percentage of recurring revenues in the country, hoping to convert more private clients across all segments of wealth to advisory and discretionary mandate, away from the ad hoc nature of many relationships and revenues.

Underpinning all these developments, the incumbent players are aiming to boost their relevant and responsiveness to their clients, improve loyalty and enhance revenues. And all this must be addressed amidst the ongoing challenges of the pandemic.
