These are similar to forwards in being agreements to buy or sell a particular asset at a specified date in the future, for a price set at the outset. But they differ from forwards by the contract being traded on a futures exchange. "Futures" contracts are standardised; they are written by a clearing house that operates the exchange where the contract can be bought and sold. This has the advantage of making "futures" highly liquid in most cases.
