This can measured in several ways - but in simplified terms a bond's duration measures the effect of each 1% change in interest rates on the bond's market value. By taking the bond's interest payments into account, "duration" helps investors assess the volatility of the bond price over time - the longer the duration (expressed in years), the more volatile the price will be.
