This is where debt and equity securities are traded, and where companies, financial institutions and governments can raise long-term funds (more than one year) through public offerings or private placements of securities to institutional investors. "Capital markets" exist either in the form of primary markets, consisting of new equity or bond issues, or secondary markets, where existing securities are bought and sold among investors or traders, usually either on an exchange or over-the-counter.
